Casa Machaya Oaxaca Mezcal Tours (website undergoing revision)

Casa Machaya Oaxaca Bed & Breakfast Mexico now operates Oaxaca Mezcal Tours, an adjunct of Mezcal Educational Excursions of Oaxaca. We have suspended operations of the rental apartment in favor of concentrating our efforts on purely agave distillates emanating from the state of Oaxaca, as well as pulque and aguamiel and all other things agave.
Leading mezcal educational tours in Oaxaca has become our passion over the past couple of decades, and so while we no longer operate the bed and breakfast, in addition to reviewing our website for information about the mezcal tours offered by authorities Alvin Starkman and Randall Stockton, please continue to read our blog entries on this website for helpful information regarding mezcal, and the articles on this site regarding crafts and culture in and around Oaxaca.
Both Randall and Alvin work under the auspices of the federal government of Mexico so you are assured of a quality experience. We combine our Western training with in depth knowledge of Oaxaca and its multiplicity of rich cultural traditions. We take clients off-the-beaten-track where tourists rarely if ever get to go, visiting quaint rural distilleries peppering Oaxaca´s central valleys and beyond, producing mezcal by both ancestral and artisanal means:
We believe in ethical tourism: never any commissions received or requested; we give back to the communities; and we select the distilleries we visit based on quality and price of their mezcal, and most importantly the personalities of the family members and the extent to which we believe they can benefit from our assistance through bringing our clients to visit their modest homes and facilities for distilling. And, their mezcal selection is both unique in terms of not being available outside of Oaxaca, yet of a quality equal to or better than the export brands available to you back home.

- sample roughly 30 different mezcals distilled in clay pots and the more traditional copper alembics
- purchase (if you are so inclined since there is never any pressure to buy) at a fraction of retail back home; in fact mezcalerías in Oaxaca buy from the same palenqueros (distillers)
- interact with the palenqueros and their families
- learn about their diverse cultural traditions
- photograph and/or film
- participate in production alongside villagers
- broad range of specie and sub-specie agaves both wild and cultivated used to make what you'll sample such as madrecuixe, tobalá, tepeztate, jabalí, tobasiche, espadín, arroqueño, coyote, and the list goes on and on
- we bottle, seal and label on the spot so you avoid any possibility of your mezcal being confiscated at the airport, and we advise about airport and customs rules and regulations
